The Old Man Season 2 is something that many fans of the show are asking about. Is it happening? If so, when could it be released on Hulu (or Disney Plus outside of the United States)? The Old Man is a spy thriller starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat. It’s proven to be a huge hit on streaming.

Fans of the show were pulled into the show very, very quickly. It really seems as though people just couldn’t get enough of the mystery of Dan Chase and his shady and interesting past. The series also features incredible actors delivering superb performances. The show is full of monologues that are just as riveting to watch as action sequences. Also, the show features two Rottweilers that quickly became fan favourites.

The series featured a pretty shocking twist ending that ended up raising just as many questions as it answered. Fans are now very much looking forward to knowing more about The Old Man, such as Season 2. Fans are waiting to know more about Season 2, and we’ve pulled together as much information about Season 2 as we could. So, without any further ado, let’s talk about what’s to come next in The Old Man saga.

So, the first question that many fans want answered is whether The Old Man Season 2 happening or not. We’ve got some good news for you on that matter. It was revealed pretty soon after the show premiered back in June that Season 2 is happening. I’m sure that many of you will be very happy to hear that.

This news was revealed shortly after Episode 4 was released on Disney Plus (or Hulu in the United States). FX also revealed that the show’s premiere was the most-watched cable series premiere since January 2021. Here’s what Eric Schrier, FX Entertainment president, had to say about The Old Man’s incredible performance:

The stellar cast led by Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, Amy Brennenman and Alia Shawkat is really connecting with audiences, and we are excited to get to work on season 2 with our colleagues at 20th Television and this fantastic team.

So, the next question is when could we get to watch The Old Man Season 2? This isn’t something that we have an answer for you yet. When FX announced that Season 2 was happening, they didn’t give a release date for the second season. They didn’t give us any clues as to when the second season could be released, which is to be expected. However, we can come up with a pretty accurate guess as to when it could be released. I’m pretty confident that we could end up seeing The Old Man Season 2 be released in the summer of 2023. However, we might end up having to wait a bit longer.

So, let’s go over what happened in the first season of The Old Man. Beware, there are SPOILERS for the first season beyond this point. So, here’s what happened in the first season:

The first season focused on Dan Chase (played by Jeff Bridges). He’s an ex-spy whose life is turned upside down when Faraz Hamzad (played by Pej Vahdat), a somewhat shady figure from his past, seeks him out after many years. Trying to bring Chase in and de-escalate the situation is the FBI’s Harold Harper (played by John Lithgow), his trusted protege Angela Adams (played by Alia Shawkat) and young CIA agent Raymond Waters (EJ Bonilla).

Chase, meanwhile, ends up becoming involved with a single mom, Zoe (played by Amy Brennenman), who joins him on the run from the FBI and, for an extra challenge, a highly trained assassin, Julian (played by Gbenga Akinnagbe), recommended to Harper by the shadowy power player Morgan Bote (played by Joel Grey).

So, the big thing that happened towards the end of Season 1 – just before the first season’s finale actually – was that Angela Adams is actually an alias for Emily Chase, Dan Chase’s daughter with the former wife of Hamzad. When Harper learns her true identity, he starts to question his relationship with her, but that all changes when she is kidnapped, forcing him to team up with Chase to get her back.

Chase ends up agreeing to surrender himself to Hamzad in the show’s finale, with the promise that Emily will be safe. This also means that he had to say goodbye to Zoe. As Harper transports Chase, he wants to know more about the flight that he helped arrange for Chase to escape Hamzad and the reason all this happened, so he can explain it to Emily. Before Chase says anything though, they learn that Hamzad is not keeping his promise of keeping Emily out of it.

Julian and Raymond were part of the crew that kidnapped Emily, but they believed that it was to hold and protect her. However, they realise that they are surrounded by Hamzad’s men and need to escape. While Julian is able to take out a number of men so Raymond and Emily can make a break for it, when they stop for a woman in the street she pulls out a gun and shoots Raymond and takes Emily.

Chase and Harper arrive on the scene, but they are too late. It’s now that Chase reveals to Harper the details of the flight — there were three passengers, not two: Chase, Hamzad’s wife and Hamzad’s young daughter, who Chase took in as his own. The first season ends with an older Hamzad who lays eyes on his long-lost daughter, Emily.

What’s The Old Man based on? Well, it’s based on a book by Thomas Perry. The book is of the same name as the series. But, the question remains, how close is the TV adaptation to the book? It’s actually pretty close to the book, but there are some key changes. One of the main differences from the book is the reason why Chase is on the run from Hamzad. Hamzad is called Hamzah in the book.

In the show, Chase escaped Hamzad, an Afghan war-lord during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, with his wife and, we later learn, his young daughter. Yet, in the book, Hamzah, was from Libya. He is after Chase because he took $20 million from him. Another difference in the show from the book is to do with Emily. She is very different in the TV show than she was in the book. In the show, they reveal that Emily has a double life as Angela Adams, working with Harold Harper in the FBI. In the series, it’s revealed that Emily is actually Hamzad’s daughter.

In the book, Emily doesn’t have an alias and no connection to Hamzad. There are some other differences, such as name changes, settings and some character backstories (Julian is one of the biggest examples). However, these changes don’t have any significant effect on the first season of the show. The Old Man book is just a standalone book, so it’ll be interesting to see how the changes impact the second season. It’ll also be interesting to see how the story develops from the end of the first season given that there’s no second book.

What about the cast for The Old Man Season 2? Well, a cast hasn’t been confirmed. So, all we can do is speculate about who could be in the second season. I’m pretty certain that we can come up with a pretty accurate guess of which cast members will be in the second season.

Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow and Alia Shawkat are all but sure to be back for the second season. Navid Negahban played the present-day Faraz Hamzad, and it should be assumed that he will reprise his role in the second season. Gbenga Akinnagbe is also a strong candidate to return, as is Joel Grey as Morgan Bote. Amy Brennenman’s could also return for the second season as Zoe. The cast members that aren’t so certain of a return are Bill Heck, Leem Lubany, Pej Vahdat and Christopher Redman.
