‘Overwatch’ Experimental Patch Notes: Buffs For Junkrat Players Who Can Actually Aim

Junkrat's about to become far deadlier in Overwatch... as long as you can aim.

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had an Overwatch Experimental card. The first one since July features planned balance changes for four heroes — Junkrat, Torbjörn, McCree and Moira — and all of them are getting buffs.

Let’s start with Junkrat, whose Frag Launcher is getting significant changes. The grenades will deal more damage on impact, with reduced explosion damage, falloff for impact damage and less knockback to compensate. So, if you think Junkrat is a hero for people who can’t aim, guess again.

The cooldown for Torbjörn’s Overload ability is being reduced from 10 seconds to eight. If you like to get up close and personal with his alt fire, there’s more good news. Each of his alt fire shots will use up two ammo instead of three. Moira’s Biotic Orb will slow down by 15% instead of the current 27.5% when it’s latched onto a ally or enemy, so it’ll be more useful for healing and damage.

As for the soon-to-be-formerly-known-as-McCree cowboy hero, the mid-air Combat Roll is back after being tested in a previous Experimental patch. His Deadeye ultimate will target enemies faster too.

Balance change patch notes are maybe more interesting than ever right now, since so much of the game will change whenever Overwatch 2 arrives. As ever, there’s no guarantee these changes will make it to the live game. They’ll be available on the Experimental card for at least a few days before Blizzard decides whether to move forward with them.

Here are the full patch notes, along with developer comments:

Developer Note: The Overload change allows Torbjörn to use Overload a bit more aggressively, instead of purely saving it for defense. When combined with the Rivet Gun change, Torbjörn will be able to dish out more damage more frequently, especially at close range.

Developer Note: This change to Deadeye allows its faster damage ramping to happen earlier, allowing it to be threatening to enemies more quickly than before. This change will help strengthen an ability that is often considered fairly weak compared to other heroes’ ultimates. Combat Roll being able to be used in the air is a nice quality of life change, but it is also a potentially powerful change when fighting against heroes with big vertical knockbacks such as Doomfist and Wrecking Ball.

Developer Note: This change allows Moira to get more power out of both of her Orbs, rather than them often using just a portion of their total potential before flying away from their targets.

Developer Note: The main goal of these changes is to increase Junkrat’s overall potential power, especially at close ranges, while weakening his long-range spam potential. Direct hits within 15 meters will now do massive damage, while area damage and long-range direct hit damage will be much lower than before.
